Castaways

22 December 2021

Several families were trapped in their homes for several days while Israeli bombardment flattened many of the surrounding homes. At the time, these brothers feared leaving their father behind in the village, as there were only enough vehicles to evacuate women and children.

Most of them have lost an arm or a leg to polio; others were the victims of car accidents (one of the leading causes of death in Ghana). For many of the players, finding money for transportation every week is a constant challenge, but hope keeps them coming - the hope to one day become Ghana's first-ever disabled football team. Richard Ofei (left) and Richard Opentil (right) fight for the ball during a football practice in Accra, Ghana. Despite missing a leg, both men are among the fastest players on the team and easily keep up with their team-mates.

The team of hope

Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, women in Iran are obliged to wear Islamic clothes in public. Since then, there have been few changes in women's hijab. Nowadays, it is a big issue for young girls to cover themselves with Islamic hijab. Chador has traditionally been black, but these days young girls in Iran are trying to use more colorful clothing in public, and so they are leading a new movement of freedom.

VCAO offers cooking, sewing and hairdressing classes to these girls so that when they are thrown onto the street (most of the time because the man of the house has raped them and the woman of the house thrown them onto the street), they can find work. Many families do not allow the girls to attend these classes, and others aren't even allowed to leave the house, they are kept under lock.

Feet of an exploited girl

The delay in demolition allowed other families to occupy, sometimes even buy, the shacks that were being left vacant. The situation worsened over the years. Today, in the suburban shanty towns of Lisbon, live the so-called second generation immigrants, who are being evicted. They will never benefit from the PER. Like this man, who, by sitting on the roof of his house, hopes to prevent it from being demolished. Could it be that the Portuguese shanty towns are a test case of what is to come for European immigration?

Africa to Europe Migration

Abu is in a field outside the amputee camp, where he lives, on November 9th, 2005. He believes Sierra Leone amputees deserve to be treated fairly, and they should have full lives. He remembers very well the rebel who mutilated his arms, and he waits for the day to meet him face to face. To his mind, an understanding between former rebels and their victims seems to be a remote possibility. He will never forget, and he is not prepared to forgive.
