Running-up 2007

Naim Chidiac

Alone and deprived: will I survive?

Presentation

This photograph was taken in the summer of 2007, in the village of Damazine, in the south of Sudan. It shows a young, solitary, hungry, confused, and anxious Sudan boy struggling to survive in the desert. The photograph portrays the struggle of most of the Sudan population to survive with a minimal amount of food. To obtain food can be the difference between life and death and this is represented by the hand that is closing around the throat which is the vital source of living i.e. where food enters the body. It is as if the child is saying: “I don’t eat, I am suffocating”. His legs reflect the same battle: “Should I get up, or simply give up and die?”
