Margarita Huenchual, who belongs to the Mapuche tribe of Chile, prepares to be photographed in front of a billboard in the center of Madrid. Margarita participated in the IV Muestra El Universo Audiovisual de los Pueblos Indígenas in Madrid with her documentary Wixage Anai (Wake Up), which deals with the urban Mapuches and seeks to revive their identity.
Chile is home to approximately 604,000 Mapuches, many of whom have had to leave their land, the Araucania, and settle in the capital, Santiago, in search of better opportunities. In the Araucania, extreme poverty is double the national average and infant mortality is three times higher.
