Social stigma, absence of rehabilitation services, resignation of families and the near-impossibility of ever finding a job force children like Shuli to lead isolated lives at the margins of society, as a burden for their parents and as lifelong victims of social rejection. Since they are completely ignored by the authorities, Shuli and others like her are known as “the forgotten childhood”. Arjan Gurung is a 9-year-old boy with serious mental and physical disabilities. He lives in a 15 m2 room with his mother, father and brother. His father too suffers from a mobility problem in his upper limbs, which prevents him from working. Their home is three hours’ walk from the center of Pokhara, along steep and precipitous paths. Arjan and his family are visited by his educator once a month. In the photograph, Arjan is learning to blow.

Forgotten childhood

Eight months later, on August 28th, fighting broke out once more in North Kivu, an eastern province which has seen some of the worst violence of recent years. The renewed conflict is between government forces and rebels led by renegade Tutsi General Laurent Nkunda, who claims to be defending the interests of the Tutsi minority. To complicate matters, another militia group, the FDLR, is also involved. It is made up of Rwandan Hutus who fled to Congo after taking part in the genocide of 1994.

They were forced into this situation by divorced and deceased parents, but they still hope and strive for a better future. For me, this image encapsulates the extremely difficult conditions these boys live in whilst life continues around them, oblivious and indifferent to their plight.

Kerala has the highest percentage of alcoholics and the mentally ill in India, and the highest number of suicides in the world. More than 28 people commit suicide every day, and more than 100 attempts to take their life. Alcohol has become the answer to the high rate of stress caused by consumerism that drives people to go beyond their actual resources. The high number of mental disorders, particularly untreated depression, is another consequence of this stress. Alcoholism and mental disorders are linked to the high number of suicides. The inhabitants of this country have always been structured into castes, and they are not culturally customed to handle and tolerate frustration. The sense of failure or the stress that builds up in chasing success cannot be managed, and the weak are driven to despair.

Children play in a village on the outskirts of Posadas, in the northwestern province of Misiones, Argentina, near the border with Paraguay. This rural area has a very high percentage of people affected by Chagas disease. Immediate symptoms are mild and often go unnoticed. Years later, 30% of infected persons develop chronic symptoms, suffering damage to the cardiovascular, nervous and digestive systems, lowering average life expectancy by approximately 9 years. There is no adequate treatment available. Children under 14 can be cured, but re-infection is always a threat.

Chagas, the silent disease

Many patients came from families who fought against the harsh dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, when thinking differently from the party resulted in being sentenced to internment in a psychiatric facility. Nowadays, the city of Elbasan, with support from international NGOs and UN agencies, has launched several initiatives to facilitate the transition from psychiatric hospital to safe houses through specific activities aimed at increasing patient independence, enabling a gradual and controlled reintegration into society.

As we solemnly commemorate the anniversary of the Prestige catastrophe, 200 similar vessels are sold like scrap to the owners of Third-World beaches, where profit and the survival of thousands of families speak louder than halfhearted environmental legislation. It’s no surprise that it’s the underdeveloped countries of the world that are the least adapted to the new eco-trends of the West. It’s hardly worth repeating that respect for the environment is a luxury when many of the world’s governments still have the eradication of hunger to deal with.

After the Nazi genocide the Roma people, who have been discriminated against over the centuries, were subjected to the harsh regime of Enver Hoxha (1946). In this period their traditions, customs and practices were nearly destroyed. In fact, during and after World War II, the Roma suffered from one of the largest mass murders in history. But, unlike the Jews, for example, they had no compensation.
