Kosovar refugees I, April 1999. Kosovo's ethnic Albanians made their way to the Albanian town of Kukes, seeking refuge from Serbian repression. This family is cared for by members of Médecins du Monde after crossing the Morina border crossing. (Running up).

Timor, November 1999. I photographed this child while he was being cared for by members of Médecins du Monde in Los Palos. They spent several hours trying to stop the bleeding, probably caused by dengue fever. After two hours I went back to the hospital to check on the child: he had died! The most painful thing was that the doctor who treated him told me that this child would not have died in any Western hospital with the minimum of medical equipment. (Running up).

Presentation

A family crosses the Morina border crossing between Kosovo and Albania on a tractor. During April 1999, thousands of refugees crossed this border crossing every day, fleeing Serbian repression.

Biography

Javier Teniente (Vigo, 1968) has covered conflicts caused by war, marginalization, and natural disasters in different parts of the world, including reports from Central America (Hurricane Mitch 1998), Kosovo (1999), Iraq (2003), Haiti (2004), and coverage of the Tsunami disaster in Banda Aceh, Indonesia (January 2005).

Over the years he has collaborated as a photographer with the United Nations, Doctors of the World, Doctors without Borders, Action against Hunger, and other international organizations.
