On 16 August 2001, panic took hold of the nearly two hundred undocumented immigrants camping in Barcelona’s Plaça André Malraux. The police action surprised the group of sub-Saharans and North Africans, many of whom tried to escape by throwing themselves down the stairs of the metro, which turned out to be a mousetrap as the accesses were blocked. It was a manhunt.
