On one hand, because of the nature of the winning entry,<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/ganador\/2022\/maria-clauss\/donde-no-habite-el-olvido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Where oblivion may not dwell<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, by the Spanish photographer<strong> Mar\u00eda Clauss, who makes visible the forgotten pastof the reprisals of the Spanish Civil War. <\/strong>The second reason is because &#8211; for the first time in the history of this Award &#8211; a woman has won the top prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/26_G_\u00a9Maria-Clauss_DondeNoHabiteElOlvido_07-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez, Huelva Provincial Prison, 2021. In this journey through time, she not only portrays key places in the province of Huelva, but also collects first-hand testimonies such as those of Juan, Dominga and Antonio. It is precisely this sight- in addition to its careful editing &#8211; that has won over the members of the jury for this edition, highlighting the importance of making visible a close but invisible reality that affects thousands of families and whose damage has not yet been repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Luis Valtue\u00f1a Award is the international showcase that demonstrates the importance of photography as an instrument of social transformation. Each award-winning image is and has been a call to raise collective awareness to make a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world. This prize pushes me to understand that I have the best job in the world&#8221;, said Mar\u00eda Clauss after receiving the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This year, 733 entries (6,531 images) were submitted and photographic series from 94 countries were received.<\/strong> <strong>T<\/strong>he largest number came from Spain (79), Italy (60), India (48), Iran (41), Russia (41), France (31), USA (27), Germany (25), Argentina (24) and Bangladesh (24). The winner will receive a cash prize of 6,000 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three finalists and a special mention<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With her work, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/finalistas\/2022\/nazik-armenakyan\/red-black-white\/\">Red Black White<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the Armenian photographer Nazik Armenakyan turns the spotlight to another invisible reality: that of the women in her country with HIV &#8211; contracted from their husbands. Due to tradition, custom or religion, they cannot talk about what they are going through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/26_F_\u00a9Nazik-Armenakyan_RedBlackWhite_09-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"{L} If we were to compare a man and an elephant, a man feels powerless in front of an elephant, for him HIV is that elephant that has covered his sun, it doesn\u2019t let the sun come to him, it can trample him every second, he depends on him\u2026 When the first stage was over, I saw the elephant and began to examine its leg, then its tail, then its head, then the picture became complete, it started to shrink. September 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Santi Palacios, <\/strong>another of the finalists, takes us to <strong>Bucha, a Ukrainian city sadly famous for being a symbol of the violations of rights perpetrated during this armed conflict<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/finalistas\/2022\/santi-palacios\/la-masacre-de-bucha\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/finalistas\/2022\/santi-palacios\/la-masacre-de-bucha\/\"><\/a><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/finalistas\/2022\/santi-palacios\/la-masacre-de-bucha\/\">The Bucha massacre<\/a><\/em><\/strong> captures the feelings and sights immediately after the departure of Russian troops from this city and documents a scenario in which the traces of war crimes are visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/26_F_\u00a9Santi-Palacios_Bucha_02-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The lifeless bodies of more than a dozen people lying on the road and sidewalk of Yablunska Street in Bucha, April 2, 2022. These photographs depict scenes that should never have happened and I am grateful for this opportunity to exhibit them, to show them and to help us not to forget what happened&#8221;, says Santi Palacios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury also wanted to give a <strong>special mention this year to the work<\/strong> <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/premioluisvaltuena.org\/finalistas\/2022\/sashenka-gutierrez\/jodete-cancer\/\">Screw you, cancer<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> by the Mexican photographer S\u00e1shenka Guti\u00e9rrez. But something is changing. In the 26 years of the Luis Valtue\u00f1a International Award for Humanitarian Photography, we have witnessed how women have gradually conquered this field as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proof of this is this 26th edition, which has maintained last year&#8217;s percentage of female participation &#8211; more than 30%, a higher figure than in other international competitions &#8211; and where, for the first time in the history of the Award, a woman has won the top prize. One of the finalists and the jury&#8217;s special mention also went to women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A top international jury<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again this year, the Luis Valtue\u00f1a International Award for Humanitarian Photography has had the support of renowned professionals in the field of photojournalism who have given their time and knowledge unselfishly in favour of the competition. The jury for the 26th edition was made up of photojournalists Emilio Morenatti, Rodrigo Abd and Walter Astrada; documentary photographers Carole Alfarah and Lurdes R.
